Microsoft’s Ad Campaign: New Family – [Briefly]

Posted on September 12th, 2008. Written by Arron.

The ad you see above is the second coming of the $300M ad campaign being ran by Microsoft, released yesterday. In it we see Jerry Seinfield and Bill Gates interact with a ‘new family’ throughout their daily life. The ad try’s to compare ‘real life’ scenarios with that of Microsoft Windows …

“… Are there any monsters in this story? – Yes, but it’s OK, there’s a firewall …”

As with the first episode in the series – yes it’s a series, *sigh* – these adverts leave you, or they leave me, thinking ‘Why?’ Adverts are meant to capture your attention within 30 seconds, and if they don’t, then they’re obviously not very good. These ‘adverts’ if you can call them that, are just waayy too long Bill … waayy too long.

The real question I think we should be asking ourselves is:
What are Microsoft trying to Achieve?

This is either really clever marketing which will make sense further down the line,
or Microsoft just killed the Windows branding, completely.

Hi, I'm Arron. I'm 20 and I am currently working as a freelance graphic designer and blogger. While managing RazorianFly, I currently also write for AppBoy.com, have previously written for 148Apps.com and have been approached by many others. I've been into graphic design for about 7 years now, and now offer iPhone and iPad Interface Design to developers professionally. Along with James, I also co-founded our brilliant new shortening service, RFly.Me. I'm very much tuned into both the App Store and Apple in general. I like the design, presentation and clarity of a product. If it doesn't cut it I'll tell you straight. I'm on Twitter, YouTube, Vimeo and Facebook!

  1. I have to say, I don’t get these ads at all! How can a company with so much money not produce far better ads than this?

They have the ability to hire the best ads companies in the world and the come up with this drivel. It was made to counteract apples pc and mac ads but all it serves to do is drive more customers to Apple
