Apple Rumor-Mill: Is it really all good?

After the last Apple keynote, Let’s Rock, something has been on my mind. I’m finally getting around to writing about it. It’s something that all us Apple fanboys are accustomed to…the rumor-mill. Whether we look forward to it, or are annoyed by it, we all have opinions about all those leaked rumors on various websites.
Is the rumor-mill all good though? Does it have negative aspects attached to it? I dive into all of this after the jump …
I guess a good place to start analyzing the rumor-mill is the latest Apple event, Let’s Rock. At this event Apple announced new iPods, yada yada yada. Just like every upcoming event, Mac websites start buzzing with user submitted rumors and very poor quality pictures that look they were taken by a five year old. These rumors and pictures increase up to the day of the event. Some sites get things right, others not so much. As of late Kevin Rose has leaked pretty detailed rumors a couple days before an event, and what he posts is usually spot on.
This brings us to the question of do you enjoy the rumor-mill? Pretty much everyone will have a different view on this. I used to LOVE seeing all the rumors of upcoming products and software. Seeing a corner of a chunk of aluminum made me wonder what Steve’s little elves might be up to now. This would build excitement up until the event. I would watch the keynote and usually have my wallet in hand ready to buy Apple’s latest creations. This thinking, for me, has changed as of late.
I’m beginning to get annoyed by the rumor-mill. I now try to avoid rumor posts like they contain the plague. Why? Well, I feel that they ruin the keynote.
At Let’s Rock, which sucked, we all knew with utmost certainty what was going to be released. I kept tabs on it through some live blogs and read as the announcements were made. What was announced matched the latest rumors that were posted a few days earlier and hinted at a couple weeks earlier. While there was nothing to get excited about at Let’s Rock, this is when my perspective changed on the rumor-mill.
I want to be surprised. I want to see Steve come out on stage and say “Bam!” He then will pull out a sub notebook that can transform into a toaster that comes in various colors. I don’t want to know whats going to be released beforehand. I know I’m probably one of the few who feel this way.
Now trying to avoid the rumor-mill before an event is like telling Angelina Jolie that you can’t hook up with her and her amazingly hot lady friend. It’s impossible to do either.
Do I know that there will be new notebooks at the event on Tuesday. Yes. Do I know that the Macbook’s will most likely be aluminum. Yes. Do I like that I know this. No.
Steve, I ask you this, please please PLEASE, surprise me and everyone else with something completely out of left field that no one has any leads on whatsoever.
I’m curious how all of you feel about this so please post up in the comments!
