Web Clip, Take 2. – [Updatedx2]

Posted on October 26th, 2008. Written by Arron.

[Update 27.10.08 @ 17.01pm GMT] – Changed typeface. I got it wrong. It’s better to stick with ‘R’ and ‘F’ in the typeface we use on our current banner. I think (and hope) you’ll agree!

[Update] – Original artwork added.

Recently, we’ve noticed a large amount of you are now checking the blog through your iPhone or iPod touch – This is awesome! – but I did feel our icon was becoming a bit ‘stagnant’ …

As of tonight, the icon above will serve to be our new web clip! If you’d like to see what it previously looked like, you can do so here.

I wanted to create a web-clip icon which felt more ‘fun’. More relaxed. Something you’d all actually want to add to your home screen. I felt the previous attempt, although nice, didn’t really reflect this. So tonight, partly because I was bored, I came up with the above. The inspiration for it ironically came from the original design of Apple’s App Store icon. That ‘zoomed’ faded effect. I then used a number of layers to colourize and finally added various finishing effects to enhance the font-type.

[Update] Original Artwork:

It’s live. Go on, give it a try … Here’s how:

1. Navigate to RazorianFly.com with Mobile Safari
2. Hit the Plus button within Mobile Safari
3. Choose ‘Add to Home Screen’

Requires iPhone and iPod touch Software v2.0

A screen will appear asking you to enter a name for your web clip, simple enter whatever you like. We’ve notice there is certain limit on characters and so we’ve found the word ‘RazorianFly’ to fit perfectly underneath the icon – This is the default we add, but it can be changed.

Overall, I think it turned out pretty well. Let me know what you think in the comments below. Do you browse RazorianFly from your iPhone or iPod touch? Did you like it the way it was? Do you prefer this one?

Hope you like it!

Hi, I'm Arron. I'm 20 and I am currently working as a freelance graphic designer and blogger. While managing RazorianFly, I currently also write for AppBoy.com, have previously written for 148Apps.com and have been approached by many others. I've been into graphic design for about 7 years now, and now offer iPhone and iPad Interface Design to developers professionally. Along with James, I also co-founded our brilliant new shortening service, RFly.Me. I'm very much tuned into both the App Store and Apple in general. I like the design, presentation and clarity of a product. If it doesn't cut it I'll tell you straight. I'm on Twitter, YouTube, Vimeo and Facebook!
