Most Wanted of 2009

Posted on January 12th, 2009. Written by J. Barrington.

The year of the App Store’s launch (2008), has made it’s close, leaving us with thousands of great (or not so great) applications and countless more to look forward to. The real question is, what are we looking forward to the most? That’s what we are here for, with our “Most Wanted” list for the new year.

Note: This list includes applications that have or have not yet been announced,
and is in no particular order.

1. Slingbox for iPhone

News about an iPhone version of Slingbox have been circulating for a number of months now, but no real information had been released until a few days ago at Macworld 2009. The internet based TV viewer is expected to be released on to the App Store this March, along with Slingbox HD for the Mac platform. Although no price has been announced, myself along with many others will be sure to buy.

2. Otto Matic from Pangea Software

Although not yet confirmed by the independent yet successful software company, email responses and common logic have hinted at an iPhone port of Pangea Software’s critically acclaimed space theme shooter for Mac OS X and Windows. You can read more about the game here.

3. Need for Speed: Undercover

The long awaited racer from EA had been delayed…. again. After being expected for release in November of 2008, then in December, we have been informed that the game will finally see the day of light this month. If it ever does come out, were hopefully going to be in for a fun, solid arcade style racer for the iPhone and iPod touch.

4. Bullet Skater from….. well….. myself :P

Let me remind you that this is my personal most wanted list, and high up on that list is the release of my own game, Bullet Skater. You play as a stickman who must dodge incoming bullets by skating around the screen, 360 degrees. It should be released in February, and you can bet that we will be giving away plenty of free copies away here at RazorianFly.

5. AppShopper Mobile

This app is going to serve the same purpose of AppSniper, except it will be better thanks to the well known author Arnold Kim, founder of popular tech blogs such as MacRumors and TouchArcade. I’m sure he will be able to create a much better (and possibly free) application for finding sales and discounts in the jungle we call….. the App Store.

6. Tiger Woods Golf

Originally announced during this summer by EA, Tiger Woods Golf is expected to be the killer app for iPhone and iPod touch, as far as virtual golf goes. A Click Wheel iPod version was released last month, and reviews were very positive. Am I excited? Certainly.

7. Metal Gear Solid Touch

Metal Gear Solid for iPhone was announced over time, in form of a puzzle. When we had officially found out, I think that just about everyone was about ready to faint. A full mobile version of MGS?! How amazing would that have been. Unfortunately, our high expectations were killed once Konami, the game’s developer revealed that it was just an on rail shooter. That means the game will play exactly the same s the first mini-game from Billy Frontier. That disappointment has let me down quite a bit, but I still am looking forward to how it all unfolds.

8. Trismology

From the developer of the star choice game “Trism”, comes a sequel that will blow us away with it’s new levels and online engine. I’m a huge fan of the original, and now that the developer is going ahead with the second? Well I’m thrilled. Not to much has been revealed about the game quite yet, but you can expect to see more news in the coming months, so stay tuned!

9. Bioshock

Bioshock…… now this, would make my year, let alone day. It’s been rumored for half a year, but now that the original developer has given the mobile porter a thumbs up, it looks like it’s a go. If you don’t know already, Bioshock is an underwater FPS that is said to be one of the most fun, and most frightening games of all time. I simply can’t wait to see it come to the iPhone.

10. Re-Volt

Re-Volt is a futuristic FPS for the iPhone and iPod touch. The developer of the “Toy Bot Diaries” had been discussing this one for a while now, but no release date or price has shown up. Recently it was revealed that the game had been postponed due to doubts that it would become a success, with the current problems with the App Store. I’m guessing we will not be seeing it until late this year (possibly summer). Even though were going to have a long wait for this one, my hopes are still high for an amazing game.

11. Payback

Payback is a GTA-style game originally made for Gameboy. You control your character from an ariel view, and steal cars, then drive away with them :) . I don’t have to much else to say about this one besides the fact that it’s going to rock, and keep me away from work for at least two weeks.

12. DanceDance Revolution

I really don’t understand why they are making an iPhone port of DDR, a game where you stop on coloured lights in time with the music. It’s going to be extremely similar to the Tap Tap series, except maybe you’ll use your feet instead of fingers……… I guess that’s what’s making me interested in it.

13. Zen Bound

This is one of the strangest concepts for a game. Ever. From what I’ve seen, you wrap animals up in rope. By doing that, you gain points. I don’t know why you get points for doing this, let alone wrapping animals in the first place. Either way, it’s being hyped quite a bit, and is going to be a highly unique title.

14. Super Monkey Ball 2

Super Monkey Ball is my favorite iPhone title to date – and I’ve tried hundreds, upon hundreds of other games. Many people have been complaining that the controls “suck” or the game just “blows” all around. I have to disagree. What you need to give this game is time. Half of the buyers have played the first two levels, then given up due to it’s difficulty. What you should be doing is push yourself to get through the first world, where the game starts to be really fun. By then you will fully appreciate what SEGA has done, and you too, will want a sequel.

I’m sorry if I left out any major titles coming out soon, it’s just that there are so many, and so little time to play them. We hope you’ve enjoyed our “Most Wanted” list, and that you choose to let us know what you’re hoping for this year.

Stay tuned for even more great news, reviews, contests and more from RazorianFly soon!

  1. Most wanted app on the iPhone for me: a modem app. But that’s not a development issue … that’s a mobile operator and Apple issue. But sometimes there are miracles … ;-)
