GeoDefense [HD Video]

There are plenty of TD (Tower Defense) titles on the App Store, but none quite as visual as this little find. It’s called GeoDefense developed David Whatley of Critical Thought Games.

Your all probably familiar with the tower defense genre of gaming now, but if your not I’d like to let you in on what it actually means.

According to Wikipedia:

Tower defense or TD is a subgenre of real-time strategy computer game. The goal is to try to stop enemies from crossing the map by building towers which shoot at them as they pass. Enemies and towers usually have varied abilities and costs. When an enemy is defeated the player earns money or points, which are used to buy or upgrade towers.

The choice and positioning of the towers is the essential strategy of the game. The enemies usually run through a “maze”, which allows the player to strategically place towers, but there are also versions of the game in which the user must create the maze out of their own towers, such as Desktop Tower Defense. Some versions are a hybrid of these two types, with preset paths that can be modified to some extent by tower placement.

Ok, now that that’s out of the way I can get into GeoDefense. Geodefense is a new TD title from Critical Thought Games. Your aim is to defend a certain goal or point from attack by little nasties. I’ll say this now, although the game is super cool to play, it’s no walk in the park. Geo Defense is extremely challenging. Up for the challenge? Read on!

Gameplay
As with all games in the TD genre, the game is based on strategy alone, played out on a twisted path. You have various defense towers at your disposal to place beside this path, in order to help you protect the end of level goal. The game can be played on three levels of difficulty including; Easy, Medium and Hard. On each level you will face wave upon wave of nasties. As levels progress the waves will become more resilient, gain more intelligence and worst of all, gain in speed.

You’ll notice entering the game that the end of the path has a number on it. This is the amount of nasties the game will let you miss before it’s game over (your lives). This number will decrease (with trippy techno-talk sound effects) each time you fail to destroy a nasty before it reaches the end of the path.

Playing Screen
Describing Geo Defense’s playing screen now; in the top right you’ll find your current score. Right of this is whats called your multiplier. Each kill earns you points times this number. In the right hand corner you have the ‘wave’ count. This will let you know the current wave, and let you know how many waves you still have left on the current level. In the bottom right is the pause button, and bottom left is the wave clock. This is a countdown to the next wave of nasties.

Of course, right at the bottom of the screen (in the center), you have your choice of defense towers. There are four types of tower you can choose from. Blaster, Laser, Missile, Lightening and Vortex, each harnessing strengths and weaknesses towards certain types of nasties.

Visuals
Sometimes, screen shots are not enough. Sometimes, you need to experience it for yourself .. and with Geo Defense, you do. With delicious retro graphics, Geo Defense is full on eye candy from start to finish. Explosive streams of colour fill the screen, and compared to the other TD games this neon wire-frame look is unique and trippy. There’s not much else to say about it.

Overall
If your new to the whole TD genre, or just like TD this is definitely worth dropping for. Currently on sale for 59p/$0.99, Geo Defense is a steal compared to the visual feedback you’ll get from this title. It’s addictive nature, polished retro graphics and a spot on frame rate makes Geo Defense a worthy TD offering. The game has high replay value and will definitely keep you hooked, possibly even for hours on end (it did me!).

Geo Defense is considered (by us) a must buy.
