March 17th: iPhone OS 3.0 [Rose: MMS / Copy and Paste]

Coverage will be posted here. We’ve stickied this post to make it more accessible.

Start those rumor mills in 3 .. 2 ..1! Joshua Topolsky of technology column Engadget just this minute received word that Apple will be holding a special event on it’s Cupertino campus in California, on the morning of March 17th 2009 – and yes, that my friends is next Tuesday! ..

The invite sent to various high profile journalists tonight reads:

“Join us at an invitation-only event to learn about the new SDK and get a sneak peek at the iPhone OS 3.0 software. The event takes place at Apple, Building 4, Town Hall on March 17 at 10:00 a.m.”

[Update 17.03.09 @13.59PM] – Kevin Rose has posted a further follow up video to his Facebook profile, in which he says he talked with various sources and can confirm to the best of his ability that MMS support and Copy and Paste will be in the iPhone OS 3.0 software update, to be released later this year.

Watch that video here.

[Update 15.03.09 @21.44PM] – Digg.com founder Kevin Rose revealed on a live Diggnation episode (194) that the elusive Copy and Paste functionality wanted by millions, is actually coming in iPhone OS 3.0. Apple is more than likely going to showcase the functionality at it’s special event on March 17th (Tuesday).

Watch the Clip (Warning: Foul Language):

” … you simply double tap on the word, and a magnifier bubble will appear with two quotes that you can drag around your selection. Once you make your selection, you can copy, paste or cut.”
- Kevin Rose

As well as confirming and describing the touch method going to be used for the feature, Rose debunked the rumors for video recording and background processing – but hinted at the same time that iPhone OS 3.0 would bring the Apple iPhone up to Palm Pre standards.

[Update 13.03.09 @ 10.55AM GMT] – There’s not a lot floating about round Apple’s event next Tuesday .. but details are starting to emerge, and it seems we might just be in for more than copy and paste on Tuesday.

According to Tech Radar, Boy Genius has received word that Apple is readying MMS support for iPhone. Not only that but they also think iPhone OS 3.0 is shipping with enhanced Bluetooth support and USB tethering.

[Update 12.03.09 @ 17.53PM GMT] – When asked about how good his source was, he replied:

“He works at Apple HQ. Can’t disclose a lot, since some is trade secrets.”

[Update 12.03.09 @ 17.41PM GMT] – Take this with the grain of salt it duly deserves. I was just informed by Twitter user @alchemistmuffin that according to his connections at Apple, we could see them sneak preview the next generation of the iPhone too.

“From what I know from a friend who works at Apple HQ, limited Copy and Paste Support, background process, MMS.”

“Also, there might be sneak peek at next gen iPhone, which has UniBody design.”

It may be nothing, but I thought I’d put it out there. :D

Original:

The event is highly expected to be software based, with Apple executives taking to the stage to unveil the new feature-set of the next revision to the iPhone (and iPod touch) OS software. iPhone OS 3.0. The release of the software itself is not expected on March 17th, but is expected shortly after – Possibly June or July. Next Tuesday, just like iPhone OS 2.0 you’ll going to see Apple wetting our lips for things to come. But what will these new tasty treats be? MMS? Video Recording? Task Switching? Push Notification? ( ..and yes Apple, we’re still waiting – patiently).

Also expected? The iPhone SDK version 3.0. Revised restrictions? Doubtful. New support? Maybe. With devices like the Touch Diamond 2 and Touch Pro2, it’s fair to say Apple are going to have to pull the features out of the bag this time. We’ve already forgive them for lack of MMS, and video recording – two basic features that every other phone on the market today has.

- Will Apple charge for the update?
- What needs improving?
- What will they improve?

While managing RazorianFly, I currently also write for AppBoy.com, have previously written for 148Apps.com and have been approached by many others. I've been into graphic design for about 7 years now, and now offer iPhone and iPad Interface Design to developers professionally. Along with James, I also co-founded our brilliant new shortening service, RFly.Me. I'm very much tuned into both the App Store and Apple in general. I like the design, presentation and clarity of a product. If it doesn't cut it I'll tell you straight. I'm on Twitter, YouTube, Vimeo and Facebook!

  1. iThink there should be a UI re-design and push notification. and more animations to make it look futuristic. landscape home screen, more multi-touch features. and more transparent views to make it look cooler

  2. If this is true, this’d be a great update to the iPhone. I’m not about to buy another (for one thing I’ve just locked myself into an 18 month contract), but I’d happily lay down a small amount of cash to get background processing. I care very little about the bling, but extra functionality is always welcome, and it sounds like Apple are sewing up the holes. Which is good.
