The Week That Was: 26/09/09 – 02/10/09

Posted on October 3rd, 2009. Written by Damon.

This week came some big releases and some that ended up not appearing when we believed they were going to (Tap Tap Revenge 3). I have managed to track down some great titles and decided to leave out all big titles by Electronic Arts and Gameloft this week to give the others a chance.

We are currently funding The Week That Was ourselves. To keep this great segment running however we really need a sponsor. Sponsoring us will give you that big banner up the top of the page and mention of your company/app each and every week. This is a very profitable position with 25,000+ people seeing your banner and 200+ clicking on it each and every month all for a cheap fee. For more information about stats, pricing etc. please enquire by contacting me at Damon@razorianfly.com.

Hip Hop All Star – $2.99

While we didn’t get Tap Tap Revenge 3 this week we got another music tapping game that is the first of its kind. Most of our music games so far feature those hit dance or pop type songs with the occasional punk or rock thrown in. Hip Hop All Star is all about the hip hop, rapping and disk scratching that you can find pumping through a nightclub. With various MC’s and DJ’s that those into this type of music would know, this is by far no cheap attempt at a game. Definitely a game aimed at mainly Generation Y and some of Gen X.

The game doesn’t have the smoothest gameplay to Tapulous standards, instead being featured on a disc. When you get enough points you get the chance the mix the track like crazy to get a heap of extra bonus points. You travel around playing various songs at different locations trying to get high scores for each track. Its really a very fun game if you like this sort of music, otherwise for the ‘older’ folk out there (No offense), this can sound like mindless dribble that those young children listen to these days.

Backbreaker Football – $0.99

After the onslaught of big NFL games by Gameloft and Electronic Arts we were eluded to the fact that a game with better graphics was about to hit the App Store. My initial thought was that this game would be another full NFL type game, but instead its an arcade type game that is all about running the length of the field jukeing and spinning your way to the end zone. But what makes such a simple game so good? Freakin’ amazing graphics that are PS3 or Xbox 360 quality. Oh and the game is pretty fun also.

Backbreaker Football has arguably the best graphics on the App Store. They are so realistic and quite amazing what they have done. I can’t begin to think what a fully fledged match would look like. In terms of gameplay though its pretty simple and easy once you master the game, with it gradually getting harder. With updates the gameplay should get more challenges, but for now buy this game just because of how good these graphics are. Really for $0.99 you are ripping off Natural Motion big time.

Nocturnal: Boston Nightfall – $4.99

Big Fish Games are the leading developer of hidden object games for the iPhone and iPod Touch, with the only other notable hidden object games being the Yard Sale Hidden Treasure series. Nocturnal however seems to have been improved greatly from the other games in the series, with a lot stronger storyline with the use of comic scenes to follow the trail of the deceased Claire. They have also taken an approach like the Yard Sale series with some mini games in between levels to mix the gameplay up a little bit.

The graphics are amazing in this game, and they have been slightly improved I believe from their previous releases. Having a stronger storyline to a game like this makes it a lot better to play, which is why I find the Yard Sale series so addictive. The game has over 30 levels to find all the objects and will take you some time to complete each one. For $4.99 this is the game to get if you love hidden object games, but if you don’t have any maybe one of the cheaper games in the Big Fish range as a tester for this one/

Other Notable Releases this week Include:

Elven Chronicles by Big Blue Bubble

FIFA 10 by Electronic Arts

AMF Bowling Pinbusters! by Vir2l Studios

Super KO Boxing 2 by Glu

Stay tuned next week for the seventh installment of ‘The Week That Was’. If you have any suggestions to improve the segment please either email me at damon@razorianfly.com or submit a comment below. Thanks! :D
