Xewton Music Studio [Contest Closed]

Congrats To Our Reader ‘Godsized’! Thank You Everyone For Entering!

There’s currently quite a number of music apps available to but on the AppStore, but I wonder if any of them are versatile and fully functional as Xewton Music Studio. Read on to find out! ..

I’ll cut right to what would be the main sticking point with the app. It’s £11.99 ($19.99), which, for the AppStore is expensive. But what you need to realise here is that this is unlike any other app out there. Unlike the other guitar and piano apps on the AppStore (some of which are quite good but only focus on one instrument), this is a fully fledged Music Studio. With 21 professionally sequenced instruments, 128 track sequencer, a note editor, real-time effects, midi import and export and wifi transfer of your projects to your pc or mac.

I’ve been playing around with this now for around a week or so, and to be honest, feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface of what this app can really do. But I’ve been able to compose a few tracks of my own and whilst it can feel like quite a complicated process I think this is more down to the power of this app and a lack of ability on my part than anything else. There are tons of features to work with and the editing abilities once you’ve recorded down your masterpiece are nothing short of amazing.

Music Studio is perfectly suited to the iDevice and moving between the many features is accomplished with a set of tabs across the top of the screen, and no matter where you are within the app or what you’re doing the attention to detail is astounding, to put it bluntly, this is one gorgeous app.

Given the depth of detail and abilities that are packed into this application it’s good to know that there is help there when needed. The Help tab within the app is a veritable goldmine of information on how to get the most out of it, whilst the website offers even more, with video tutorials to take you through every aspect of composing, recording, editing and exporting your musical masterpiece.

I haven’t really found any real issues with this, sure, I could complain that there aren’t more instruments, but that would be just greedy. The choice included is more than enough (a grand piano, a violin, a cello, string ensemble, alto saxophone and 3 guitars to name but a few). The talented developer has said there are plans to add even more instruments, and that would be the icing on the cake.

I suppose, if I could have anything added to this app it would be the ability to add standard chords at the touch of a button (currently you have to input everything using the 81 note, 64 polyphonic keyboard) and it would be a time saver to not have to manually add each note in a chord. Again, this may be an issue with my abilities rather than the app, as a guitarist, my keyboard knowledge is a little lacking so for the more talented musician, my criticisms may not be valid.

Whilst at the price this may not be for everyone, but if you’re at all serious about your music you can’t really afford to miss out on this app. It truly shows the real power of the iDevice and moves it from a gamers device to something much more substantial. Truly stunning work.
