Guerrilla Bob is out now on the App Store – $2.99

Intro

We have a brand new sponsor, Chillingo! Look out for this segment to be continued for months to come. Thanks guys!

Aaaaand we are officially back in business! It seems two of our three regulars, Electronic Arts and Chillingo have finally hit the App Store with titles for 2010. While Gameloft seems to be having a month off except a small unheard title, I have seen some awesome previews of stuff to come in February and beyond.  Along with the games like the sequel to EA’s first real hit on the App Store, we have seen some other big titles like Sonic (Without Mario) at the Olympic Winter Games (Then pulled) and more. While we are still switching between playing GTA and reading previews of stuff to come,  2010 has started off with a bang compared to 2009.

Since we are now in February we will be going back to weekly posts!

Spore Creatures – $6.99

Spore Creatures is the long awaited sequel to Electronic Arts first big hit on the App Store, Spore Origins. This sequel takes your creature out of the water onto land for another 30 levels of accelerometer surviving fun.  I was interested to see how Creatures would step up this game from Origins, especially since that title is considered a basic game nowadays and the Spore madness has died off from this time last year. Electronic Arts have managed to turn this very similar game into something that feels different, feels better but maintains the basic gameplay we loved in Origins.

Spore Creatures is all about eating other creatures to survive, but this time they are bigger and nastier than ever. With an improved evolutionary line and heaps of new in-game features, Spore Creatures feels like it has made an advancement itself in how this game plays. I found this game as fun as ever with the wicked tilt controls and huge creature creator to pimp out your Spore with an array of weapons and bodyparts. When it comes down to it this is a more in-depth Spore Origins, for some it won’t do but I found this title worthy to have a place on my iPhone.

Assassin’s Creed II Discovery – $9.99

I seem to be in the minority when I say that I absolutely loved Assassin’s Creed: Altair’s Chronicles. The game for me featured everything I adored in Hero of Sparta and had a crazy amount of extra skills and items put on top of it. The game still fares well to this day on the App Store, having the great adventuring we expect in the console versions. Ubisoft has finally dipped their hand into the App Store developing the sequel themselves, taking away the free roam experience I love making this a side scrolling improvement on the DS version of the very same game.

AC II Discovery has taken away the part of the game I loved and made it a pre-determined path with the only options of going left or right. The aim was to make this game as more of a casual game with lots of short sharp missions and a simple enough gameplay. I feel like they have achieved this, with it growing on me as a 3D Sonic game almost. With stealth, chase and normal missions set in beautiful areas, this game surprised me with it’s excellent graphics as well. This title shocked me with how fun it is as I didn’t believe a side scrolling version of Assassin’s Creed would work. ACII proved me wrong.

Guerrilla Bob – $2.99

Guerrilla Bob to me definitely seems like a previously titled gamed Hardgore which was meant to follow on from the incredibly successful Minigore. This game is still a dual stick shooter that features the same lovable graphics in Minigore, but has substituted the survival aspect of Minigore and placed in a storyline and career mode as such. This game has the depth I felt Minigore was lacking as you must travel through levels to hunt down your arch enemy, who just happens to be the famous John Gore himself. This is some of Chillingo’s best publishing to date.

Your character, Bob, is set on avenging himself after John Gore ruined his career in the army. You must fight your way through many challenges while using an array of weapons to blow up, splatter and annihilate anything or anyone in your path. There are some extremely cool characters and big boss fights at the end of each level which will easily satisfy those wanting more than what we got in Minigore. This is better than I was expecting when I heard the words “Dual Stick Shooter” and “Chillingo” in the same sentence. Definitely an awesome game loaded with content.

RhymePlayer – $1.99

I was very interested to check out this game (Mainly due to my love of music games) and see what it was like compared to the strong field on the App Store. RhymePlayer lets you tap to the lyrics instead of the beat or instruments for a change and the process is definitely quite fun. There are two game modes, easy and normal, which just choose whether you can tap the whole screen or if it’s split in two. I found both modes WAY to easy and not challenging enough for me. The other deal breaker in this game for me is the incredible lack of songs which is a major turn-off.

We are given 5 great tracks by big artists, but there are no options to get more. TTR3 and Rockband have shown DLC in music games work so why not implement it here? 5 tracks isn’t enough to get people on board to even buy this game, 10 or 15 for a slightly higher price + more via DLC would get people buying this game. With no leaderboards, online connectivity and any real reason to come back to this game, I suggest you stay away from this until they fix this game to make it feel like whole version, not a lite. I was pretty disappointed with this title as a whole.
