iPhone Apps: How Do You Sort Yours?

Posted on March 9th, 2010. Written by Trevor.

Lets face it, there are now more Apps available in the AppStore than any one human could possible need. Whilst a large number of them are useless, ugly or just down right appalling it still raises an ever growing issue. How to organise the ones you want on your iPhone’s homescreen.

I’ve seen many variations of this, some which make sense and some that don’t. Let me clarify that, it makes sense to organise them by type of App, or most used. But makes no sense when they are just randomly placed. I’ve seen an iPhone with 10 pages of apps and no more than 3 or 4 apps per page – What’s the point in that?

Personally, I find it an eternal struggle as I’m torn between a minimalist approach (no more than 2-3 pages) and the desire to put everything on there, after all, I have paid money for them. But it seems that no matter what I do, I constantly find myself wanting to rearrange things. In fact, it’s probably fair to say that I now spend more time rearranging apps than I do actually using them.

Is there a solution to this condition? Maybe, If you care to Jailbreak your iPhone or iPod touch, you can then use Categories or any number of other apps available from Cydia to help arrange your apps. This seemed like a great idea to me, as my initial homescreen would be uncluttered with the minimum number of icons, and then each category could be sorted alphabetically (I know, I know that’s kinda sad, but that’s the way I am, everything just feels better when it’s stored in an alphabetic format). I never had the patience to sort out categories as my attention would wander and I’d be back to deleting a load of Apps. This has become my biggest problem. I have to wait so long for apps to sync that when I’m trying the ‘as many as I can’ approach, I tend to get bored half way through the sync and give up.

I can only hope that the few hints about OS 4.0 providing better navigation gives me the answer to my problems. Just as an FYI, the images here are my current homecreen layout (alphabetical again). But that may well have changed by time you read this, I can feel my hands itching to find a more convenient way to organise them.

So, back to the original question; How do you sort yours?

  1. Most used apps first. That takes up about 4.5 pages.
Games which takes up all the rest but the last page
Last page are all the Apple apps that I don’t use or have replacement apps for plus a few apps that I don’t use all that much but want on the iPhone.

Personally, I want about 5 more pages of Springboard to work with. Or a much better way to organize apps than iTunes/Springboard. Jailbreaking is not an option.
