Ever since the introduction of iPhone OS and the original iPhone in 2007, many people have wondered why Apple choose not to put the space on the device’s lockscreen to better use. Compared to other popular mobile operating systems like Palm OS and Blackberry OS, many believed (and still do) that iPhone OS should display more information on this screen, such as e-mails, weather and small notes.

For those that are jailbroken however there will soon be a solution. Smartscreen which is already available on Cydia for both iPhone and iPod touch users, selling for $5.00, is an application which hasn’t been Apple certified but allows for the the display of extra information such as e-mail, weather, music and more in a Mac OSX widget-esque fashion.

The video below shows the unreleased software running on the iPad, and we have to say it looks pretty hot.

If this shows us anything at all, its that there is definitely potential for Apple to bring this functionality natively to iPhone, iPod touch and iPad sometime in the future. Whether it’ll happen though is a different story.

With iPhone OS 4.0 in the wings to be deployed sometime this June for iPhone and iPod touch users, and iPad users later this year, the future of the OS is slowly being mapped out. Personally, we feel its a more customizable, user-centric future, one which may just see Mac OSX widgets make the jump to iPhone OS.
