PixelSwarm: The Colourful, Interactive Visualizer for iPhone and iPad

Posted on May 29th, 2010. Written by Arron.

Developed by Wunderkemmer, PixelSwarm is a trippy visualizer for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad which allows you to interact with the colour-filled visuals simply by touching the screen.

The universal app uses four different types of flying particle – orange, purple, electric blue and yellow, taking advantage of the iPad’s hardware acceleration, with the the app’s engine allowing you to create various different compositions of visually pleasing patterns.

The streams of coloured dust will obey your every move, making for a highly relaxing experience.

Relax and bliss out while playing with clouds of space dust! PixelSwarm is a particle system for the iPad (and iPhone!) that responds to your touch with beautiful swirls of colors and motion.

PixelSwarm has four types of particles all behaving in different ways, so you can experiment with touches and gestures to create all sorts of weird behaviors. Tap it, stroke it, press and hold multiple fingertips… Find stable orbits! Create washes of color! Toss dots from finger to finger and play catch! You’ll have to play to find out what it can do.

Disappointingly, PixelSwarm doesn’t move to your music. This app is specifically designed to be manually controlled. That said, the app doesn’t stop you playing music in the background while you tap, poke and pinch.

PixelSwarm is available now for $0.99.

Hi, I'm Arron. I'm 20 and I am currently working as a freelance graphic designer and blogger. While managing RazorianFly, I currently also write for AppBoy.com, have previously written for 148Apps.com and have been approached by many others. I've been into graphic design for about 7 years now, and now offer iPhone and iPad Interface Design to developers professionally. Along with James, I also co-founded our brilliant new shortening service, RFly.Me. I'm very much tuned into both the App Store and Apple in general. I like the design, presentation and clarity of a product. If it doesn't cut it I'll tell you straight. I'm on Twitter, YouTube, Vimeo and Facebook!

  1. Hey there! Author here. Thanks for the nice review! I've just submitted version 1.1 to the App Store, after adding a detailed settings menu that lets you adjust colors, behavior, and other stuff to make tons more trippy visuals. I've thought about adding sound support, like making it respond to music that's playing, or even generating an ambient soundtrack as you touch the screen with more and more fingers, so it's good to hear people are interested in audio stuff. I'm torn between more species of swarms vs. sound support in the next release. :)

  2. V1.1 was just approved! Check it out if you so please. :)

  4. Hi, I've just purchased PixelSwarm and think this app would benefit from being able to respond to music. Any more swarms would cause my iPod Touch 3rd Gen to slow down and clutter the screen. Please consider this for a future update.
