Posted by admin on 08 Jun 2010 @ 11:55 AMWith the release of the iOS 4 GM seed to developers, and through all of the beta’s, I highly doubt there is going to be a huge need for a jailbroken iOS 4. With the addition of numerous features, I highly believe that we’ll see less reasons to jailbreak.
For example, multitasking. Coming to most iOS4-based devices, we will see less and less need for those third party “backgounding” tweaks. With this addition and the absolute class which Apple have developed and deployed the Multitasking feature into iOS 4 with, there is going to be a few developers disappointed when it comes to “their jailbreak scene.”. Apple have now dismissed one main reason for jail-breaking.
Everyone who has had a jailbroken device will have used SBCategories, or just Categories. This is a tweak developed and maintained by BigBoss, but with the addition of Folders in iOS 4 and the complete ease of use of them, there is no need for this tweak anymore. Once again, Apple have eliminated yet another key reason for jailbreaking.
Here’s the biggy. iAds. Now, I know that numerous jailbreak tweak developers have already started on a iAd blocker for 4.0, but I must ask you this. iAds supports those developers that allow you to download their applications for free. I believe that iAds is not a problem, it is one of the most amazing things that Apple could have done to easily support those developers that create astonishing applications which go onto the AppStore for free.
I myself have now got iOS 4 GM installed on my 3G[s] and I am by far impressed. It runs like it is supposed to, and I honestly believe we’ll see 4.0 a few days before the 21st.
Unfortunately the need for the jailbreak is slowly dwindling, but will we still need one? After all, the jailbreak has effectively given us all of the features of iOS4 in some way or another … Apple just, you know, polished them up a little.
Feel free to leave comments discussing this and I’d love to hear why some of you enjoy your jailbreak at the present moment.
Note: we don’t condone commenting about install0us, hackul0us, any of that, any piracy concerns and comments will be deleted, be nice!

Some great discussion going on in the comments on this article today. / iOS 4 – Need to Jailbreak Anymore? • http://dlvr.it/1X54y / #iOS4
One feature that jailbraking gives users is the ability to create a WiFi hotspot on their iPhone for their WiFi iPad. Since Apple/AT&T feel that we don't need this ability (Apple probably protecting iPad 3G sales this way), jailbreaking to get this ability seem a no-brainer. (other than the possibility of AT&T not liking us tethering in an unofficial way)
One thing im STILL waiting for Apple to put into the firmware is the quick sms reply, its one of the main reasons I jailbreak, multitasking is not complete without it and jailbreak has offered it for years. It said on the 4.0 keynote that it would be included but we are on the GM MC and I have yet to see it implemented.
Actually, your right Ryan. There is another very good reason for jailbraking. The Lock Screen is such a waste of space. There is plenty of room for all kinds of useful info. A Lock Screen “dashboard” is another strong reason for jailbraking.
As far as quick SMS reply. That could be handled in that dashboard as well as a button in the dialog that appears when you receive an SMS.
To be fair, there are a lot of features that for some reason Steve doesn't want to mention in iOS 4. I suspect we will finally find out what they are on June 21st when it's finally released.
One reason above all else: file system access. I need to be able to save and download and move files (particularly on iPad). Thus, I will always JB until Apple realizes we aren't children to be “protected” from what's under the hood. RTFM.
Well, let's sum up the reasons why anyone would still like to jailbreak:
1. LockInfo – like Dave_Metzener has mentioned, it would be always nice to get all your quick summary of info on your lock screen w/o the need to dig through all your apps looking for that tiny red badge
2. QuickReply – although now the iOS4 supports multi-tasking, I would still prefer to do a quick reply of sms w/o the need to exit from an app and go into the sms app just to reply a msg
3. WinterBoard – yes! we do get to change our wallpaper and escape from the old boring black background with iOS4 and we do get Category now. BUT, something you might have missed out is that the category/folder icons are just a mini squashed springboard into the size of an icon. You can really tell which category/folder is what unless you read the text below. WinterBoard would easily solve the issue by allowing customization of icons to make things more recognizable.
4. 3G-Unrestrictor – Telco's constraints, App Store limiting size of 20mb,Youtube's poor quality on GSM network and FaceTime limited to Wi-Fi only. This is what 3G Unrestrictor can do for us! Bluff the 'smart' iPhone to think its on Wi-Fi when you are actually on GSM network.
5. AttachmentSaver, YourTube and Safari Download Manager – why is it till now, Apple still does not allow us to natively saves files in the Mail app or within Safari browser or any Youtube videos?
6. iFile – I totally agree with Andy.
7. MyWi – ^5 Dave_Metzener. Tired of not being able to teether to you iPad or other devices even when you are holding on to a iPhone with unlimited Data? this is what jailbreak is all about.
8. FakeCarrier – its pretty cool to customize your default carrier's name to something that isn't so dull
All those points are compelling reasons for jailbreaking except #8. I really don't feel the need to change the name of the carrier just because it's cool.
Downloading files into the iPad for later moving off to the Mac/PC just seems like a natural thing for the device to do. Your in Mobile Safari, you find an application you want to try out later when you get home, you download the file to the iPhone/iPod touch/iPad, then later, when connected and sync'ing, you can move the files off the iDevice like pictures in iPhoto.
I can't tell you how many times I have wanted to download a file rather than email myself a weblink to later look at when I get home. Same with #4.
I don't really have a problem with Folders in iOS 4. I'll just be grouping apps in such a way that it will be clear what is in what folder. Odd that iOS 4 only allows 12 apps per folder instead of 16. I guess they needed space to allow you to drag icons out of folders.
You forgot about SBSettings. Another main reason I jailbreak.
I also just wanted to say (and this is totally opinion), but I don't think this author knows what he's talking about. He's obviously never experienced the true power or potential of a jailbroken iPhone. It is days better than a stock iPhone. I've already jailbroken and unlocked my 3G for use with T-Mobile with iOS4 using Redsn0w, and granted not all the JB apps work yet, the devs will eventually have things working right. Already using SBSettings and it's a much better task manager than the drawer at the bottom that Apple gives you.
That's just one example. And QuickReply is one of my favorites! Unfortunately it's not working yet, and Apple is forcing me to swap to the “Messages” app which is taking 10x as long as QuickReply would have. This is just my 2 cents.
I agree, I have experienced and built themes and worked side by side with others on the development of tweaks for the iPhone jailbreak community. However I still stand strongly that the release of iOS4 shows that Apple are slowly working on giving the iPhone and iPod Touch the same experience on a stock firmware than a jailbroken one.
I believe that by iOS6 there will be no need for a jailbreak. I'm not saying that a stock firmware is for everyone, most people are dependant on it being unlocked. All I'm saying is that Apple are slowly destroying the reasons to jailbreak.
Sabastien, it wasn't my intention to offend. I'm glad we could have this discussion. The point of your article is if there is still a need for jailbreaking and that you think that need is dwindling. I strongly disagree. I have a love/hate relationship with Apple. I love how inventive their products are, how sleek their designs are, and their OS is great both on the iPhone and Mac. However, if I know Apple at all, they limit the users. They don't want them having too much control. I don't think that is something that will change. They've been that way for over 10 years. Thus, if this business approach never changes, neither will the need for jailbreaking. Their iPhone is so cool, yet at the same time so very limited. Just compare to other phones. My iPhone can't do half the things my coworker's Palm Pre can do, UNLESS I jailbreak it. Now, don't get me wrong, that business model Apple has might rake in a TON of money and be great in a lot of ways, but many people feel Apple has too much control. This may be a steep generalization, but I think most people want more freedom on their iPhones.
Another thing that annoys me and a good point you brought up; you said “However I still stand strongly that the release of iOS4 shows that Apple are slowly working on giving the iPhone and iPod Touch the same experience on a stock firmware than a jailbroken one.” This is sad in my opinion, because essentially all those amazing developers who came up with ingenious ideas that were only available on a jailbroken iPhone with 3.1.3 or under receive absolutely no credit from Apple regarding their hard work. Apple is essentially stealing their work that those developers were trying to use to improve the iPhone in the first place.
Anyway, maybe I'm just playing a little devil's advocate because I really do like Apple. I just like Apple even more with extra options, customization, and freedom. When Apple finally learns that this is what the majority of iPhone users want, then the need for jailbreaking will dissolve. We don't see talk of people “jailbreaking” Androids or Blackberries do we? Heavens no, because all the freedom is already there. Nuff said, I think I've made my point. Sorry to drag on…

One reason for me… My Wi :)
I agree that there is still a need to jailbreak.
However it is dwindling on the stage of not needing it anymore.
I do agree however, with the MyWi comment and the SDM comment.
I have always used MyWi as I get charged an extra $9.99AUD for USB tethering,
but with MyWi I get it free and through WiFi too. Safari Download Manager is the absolute best, so if the developer (top bloke).
I think iOS4 and a jailbreak would be amazing.

Absolutely there's still a reason to jailbreak. I can't stand being without Notifier which adds mail/phone icons to your status bar and MyWi which allows me to bypass the $20 fee AT&T is trying to charge to let me access data I already pay for.
There's still a huge number of reasons to jailbreak – and not a one of them involves piracy.

Didn't like my like my honest truthful comment. OK f*ck this blog then for removing my thoughtful comment I took the waste of time to make.
Reason numero uno to jailbreak. You don't need to give Apple your credit card details. If you don't do that and I (fanboy numero uno) am resisting with all my will, then you are not trapped inside the walled garden. I love Cydia, Cylay, xGPS, Docs, Terminal, BossPrefs, Modem, WiFiFoFum etc.
Sorry It's still there! (egg all over my face!) :-

Jailbreaking is necessary to even get the full effect of ios 4 for about half of the iDevices. The ipod 2nd Gen and 1st Gen both “don't support” the springboard background feature or multitasking, but after jailbreaking and accessing these features to the fullest, there is no reason for these devices to be limited to what they have been by apple. The way i see it is this is a bit of a scheme by apple to promote their devoted customers to update their hardware, because there is no reason for apple to limit older devices capabilities on ios4.
Apple's hardware is all preferential and and so limited in their capabilities, when an iDevice is opened to 3rd party sources then these things really do work.
About 3 weeks ago I wrote <quote> Reason numero uno to jailbreak. You don't need to give Apple your credit card details. If you don't do that and I (fanboy numero uno) am resisting with all my will, then you are not trapped inside the walled garden.</quote>
Some kind soul pointed out to me that I could register an iTunes account WITHOUT giving Apple my credit card details simply by choosing “No card…” I rang Applecare and was helped through the process of doing exactly that, of course I still had to supply Apple with my home address and DOB.
Well GUESS WHAT, three weeks later, and you can't do it anymore!
Also articles are appearing how Apple want to prosecute people who JAILBREAK!
My trust in Apple involves some serious fence sitting at this point in time.
