Posted by Arron on 29 Jul 2010 @ 1:41 AM9to5Mac is reporting via Engadget that Amazon has just announced the release of its brand new, thinner faster and lighter, Kindle e-book reading device. The question is; Can it kill the Apple iPad?
To be honest – we’re skeptical. The new Amazon Kindle is an iPad-crushing 21% smaller, 15% lighter and 20% faster than its predecessor, still boasting that patented e-ink display which made the device so popular in the first place.

This new version carries 4GB in internal storage, with the same 6-inch display. Available in two configurations the new Kindle will set you back $139 for the WiFi-only model and $189 for the 3G version.
Its secret weapon? – A web browser.
The new Kindle also is getting an “experimental” web browser. Now you can browse on that 6 inch e-ink display; take that Apple! The controls and keyboard are also reportedly improved and hey… it’s a physical keyboard.
The Kindle will begin shipping August 27.

Ofcourse it won't/can't "kill" the iPad. It's a totally different device. The Kindle is purpose built for reading things as if they were printed on paper. It's designed to be easy on the eyes for long reading sessions.
The iPad is, as you know, a lot more than just a reading device. Not only this, but it's brightly lit screen with multiple colours (even in iBooks!) are just not designed for those long reading sessions… Yes it is very capable of being an eBook reader, but it isn't purpose built for it like the Kindle.
It's like comparing Apples and Oranges. (Pun intended)

It’s naïve to talk about killing the iPad. It’s safe to say the iPad won’t be “killed” anytime soon.
The question that should be asked is, “Can the new Kindle recapture market share in the eBook market?”
The eInk vs the LCD display difference could be enough of a differentiator for some to buy, especially at such a low price.
It’s my belief that Amazon will go with the iPod/iTunes model where they’ll be more interested in selling what goes on the Kindle rather than the Kindle itself.
