User Advice – Don’t Upgrade Your iPhone 3G to iOS 4! – [Updated]

Posted on July 29th, 2010. Written by Arron.

We recently gave you the heads up that Apple was reportedly looking into claims that iPhone 3G users are experiencing slower than intended speeds, after installing the latest revision to their mobile operating system iOS4.

But what level of user feedback must Apple itself have received to warrant looking into the situation? Well, if you head over to company’s official discussion boards, it becomes immediately clear just how many users are experiencing issues with the new software – and it’s not just the “slowness” of the OS which is getting users in a knot. Some users are simply having a hard time operating the phones they originally purchased.

One user notes:

I also have the 3G and I’m having ‘Choppy’ problems. By far the most annoying one is on the “Slide to open” screen. It hangs for ages preventing me from getting into the phone. I can slide my finger over anywhere between 1 and 15 times before the phone actually responds.

Tonight I’m going to do a complete wipe and restore from new (over night cos it takes ages) to see if that fixes it. I hate doing this as the backup does actually lose things I need to go in and reset so it’s a pain I could do without. All this just to get email threads, 1 inbox and folders! While I’m at it, why didn’t they add smart folders into mail?

Another:

I’m not going to get into definitions of what multitasking and backgrounding are. I just used the same marketing term that apple use on their website (See for yourself @ http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/). What makes you think that iPhone is not already running multiple processes at the same time (irrespective of whether they give user control or not)? The processor inside isn’t that incapable.

I know what you’re thinking – The iPhone 3G is two years old. Of course it isn’t going to be as capable as the iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4. Mainly due to its slower processor and the amount of RAM it carries! – and you’re right. These are all valid reasons. But surely the performance seen by the end-user should be of a usable level?

You can check out the user threads which have been raised about the various issues iPhone 3G users have experiencing, here, here and here.

Do any of you have these issues yourself?

[Update] – Reader Sebastien notes via jailbreak extraordinaire @Comex that turning off ‘Spotlight Search’ in iOS 4 seems to improve (if not solve) the lagging issues some iPhone 3G users are experiencing.

Hi, I'm Arron. I'm 20 and I am currently working as a freelance graphic designer and blogger. While managing RazorianFly, I currently also write for AppBoy.com, have previously written for 148Apps.com and have been approached by many others. I've been into graphic design for about 7 years now, and now offer iPhone and iPad Interface Design to developers professionally. Along with James, I also co-founded our brilliant new shortening service, RFly.Me. I'm very much tuned into both the App Store and Apple in general. I like the design, presentation and clarity of a product. If it doesn't cut it I'll tell you straight. I'm on Twitter, YouTube, Vimeo and Facebook!

  1. Not a 3G, but a 2nd Gen iPod Touch, and not so choppy, but I'm seeing lots of crashes. :(

  2. It is definitely slower, but improvements are on the way it would seem. Older is still no excuse though – it can run 3.1 OK, so it should be able to run the cut down 3G version of 4.0 as well.
