Facebook Building A Data Center Up In North Carolina, Too?

By now, we probably don’t have to tell you about Apple’s ginormous data center being built in North Carolina, scheduled for competition early next year.

But it seems the company isn’t the only one extending build in North Carolina. WRAL reports social networking giant Facebook may also be planning to build a data center in the area, too.

Gov. Bev Perdue said Thursday that social networking giant Facebook will build a data center in Rutherford County.

“We are proud that Facebook chose to make North Carolina a ‘friend.’ The feeling is certainly mutual,” said Gov. Perdue.

Construction of the $450 million Forest City facility will create 250 jobs over an 18-month period, according to the governor’s office. Once finished, Facebook expects to offer 35-45 full-time and contract jobs.

The building will be designed to the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED “gold standard,” a third-party verification of environmental sensitivity.

It is not yet known how large the plot for the build is, but it is reportedly going to cost Facebook $450 Million.
