Following the versions of its e-book store available for both iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, online retail giant Amazon has today released a new version of Kindle for Mac. Released last year, and now available on the new Mac App Store, the app provides users with access to over 775,000 e-books, including brand new releases.
But although Amazon has made headway in offering its e-books to Mac users, Apple is seemingly dragging its heels on providing iBooks for Mac. Amazon’s Kindle for Mac is currently sitting pretty, coming in at 5th most downloaded overall for the entire Mac App Store.
Has Apple missed a trick here? Its own iBooks application isn’t yet available for the Mac. Meanwhile, and also in publishing, Apple is expected to participate in Rupert Murdoch’s Daily launch next week, even as some in the industry reveal disappointment at magazine app sales so far.
