Despite many installing iOS 4.3 (Beta 1) to find that the touted “personal hotspot” feature is not available to use, Twitter user @jaswah has confirmed the feature appears to be live and working on Australia’s ‘Optus’ mobile network.
One more shot after the break.

[Update 2] – Twitter user @BeauGiles confirms “Personal Hotspot” is also live and working on @Telstra.

[Update 3] – Personal Hotspot feature is also live on Rogers (Canada). Received multiple tips on this one now. Thanks to reader Jamil (@JamilD) for being another to confirm!

Neat. As far as I can tell, I’d believe it’s tied to the tethering settings; if you carrier has tethering enabled (and depending on your carrier, you’ve paid for access), you should have access to WiFi tethering; it’s just another method in addition to bluetooth and USB tethering. However, don’t quote me on this!
More interesting as far as I’m concerned, the main difference between this built in WiFi tethering and earlier jailbreak methods (MyWi, etc) is that the native tethering uses ‘Infrastructure’ mode for broadcasting as opposed to Ad-Hoc (which is what MyWi uses). Infrastructure mode is compatible with more devices (for example, Windows Phone 7 and the Sony PlayStation 3 don’t support Ad-Hoc networks)
Rogers as well in Canada, just tested and it works excellently!

I’m travelling in Australia and I just arrived in Perth. I’m Canadian/American. I have had MASSIVE trouble with this hotspot enabling, which I need to provide internet access to my desktop and other devices so that I can WORK. I went with Optus pre-paid and learned shortly after that they simply don’t allow you to enable personal hotspot. Why? Because they want to gouge you for for it, they want to charge you. And no, they won’t turn it on for pre-paid either, even if you want to pay, they insist on post-paid contract account, which is not available to travelers who don’t have an address to send a bill to.
If you are travelling to Australia be VERY cautious, the internet service and companies here are DRACONIAN and intensely manipulative. As it stands right now I am being forced to investigate a jailbreak on iphone4 OS 4.3 which is problematic and/or not viable. Other carriers here including “3″, Virgin, Vodaphone and Telstra all either don’t support this option out of ignorance (just try getting past customer service chimpanzees on the phone), or only support it if you sign a service contract (and have an address to send bills to). &#^%
Optus, damn you all to hell, you can burn in hell for eternity you filthy bastard a$$holes jerks. I hope you go out of business, worthless turds.
