According to a new report by Business Insider (via iDB) this weekend, Apple may have considered the $800 Million acquisition of online storage service Dropbox in an attempt to add more infrastructure to its upcoming iCloud offering.
With the firm’s original co-founder, Drew Houston, now a billionaire, after the company was recently valued at a staggering $4 Billion U.S Dollars, the publication goes on to claim that the online storage provider had a $100 Million yearly income at the point of Apple’s consideration to purchase.
However, the information should be taken with a pinch of salt. Mainly because Business Insider itself claims that it was not “perfectly sourced” and that they “heard it from two second-hand gossipers”.
As for what we think? — Sure, in theory, a storage service like Dropbox could provide Apple with the necessary resources to provide enhanced document sharing within iCloud. It certainly makes sense from an iOS point-of-view, what with Dropbox having its own embeddable API.
As for the truth, though, we’ll probably never know. That is, unless someone from either Apple or Dropbox is willing to talk about the alleged deal – and we’re guessing they’re probably not.
