What happens when you refuse to entertain one of the biggest growing mobile gaming platforms in the world? – You lose money … and that’s exactly what has happened to Nintendo, who this week announced a net loss of $923 Million for the first 6-months of fiscal 2011.
The news follows Nintendo’s North American Honcho, Reggie Fils-Aime, announcing back in March that the firm didn’t want to deal with “garage developers,” making it crystal clear that Nintendo would prefer not to deal with the “hobbyist” developer, but also ensuring he clarifies that the company will continue to support the individual developer.
Fils-Aime explained that he feared the iTunes App Store, (and digital App Stores like it), would further build up this idea of a “disposable” culture around portable gaming. His point being that, not all portable games should be thought of as disposable.
He noted that the majority of players who buy games for console do not think of these games as “disposable”. Sure they might trade them in after playing them, but there is never a mentality which relegates them to the trash can, so why should games designed for a portable device with a small display, be any different?
“I would separate out the true independent developer vs. the hobbyist,” Nintendo of America president Fils-Aime told Gamasutra’s Chris Morris during a recently published interview. “We are absolutely reaching out to the independent developer.”
In one sense, Fils-Aime’s opinion as admirable. In short, he wants to ensure mobile games are developed with a certain standard, function and quality, instead of focusing on titles which have less time and effort put into them but are churned out at 1-hit wonders. However, this stance on not wanting to support the iOS platform has cost the developer dearly, with Nintendo’s $923 Million loss living testament of that decision.
Here’s hoping this is enough for someone at Nintendo to reconsider.
