The Verge reports this morning that a security researcher who developed a method in which to “jailbreak” Microsoft’s Windows RT operating system has this week been praised by the Redmond, Washington company.
In perhaps stark contrast to the jailbreak community which has sprung up around Apple’s iOS devices, the publication writes that the company issued a statement explaining how they “applaud the ingenuity of the folks who worked this out,” adding that “the hard work they did to document it” was appreciated.
The process involved for running desktop apps on Windows RT is fairly complex, and Microsoft acknowledges that it’s “not something the average user could, or reasonably would, leverage as it requires local access to a system, local administration rights and a debugger in order to work.” The company is also not guaranteeing that the vulnerability “will be there in future releases” of Windows RT, indicating that it plans to patch the flaw in future.
Windows RT (codenamed ‘Windows on ARM’) is a special edition of Microsoft’s “Windows” operating system, which is designed to run on mobile devices utilizing the ARM architecture, such as the firm’s new “Surface” tablet.
