Google Currents Goes 2.0 – Breaking Stories, Fast Scan, Saved Stories … (and More!)

Google’s official iOS client for its Currents service went 2.0 yesterday. Considered a major update to the magazine content distribution client, Currents 2.0 includes a number of new additions which are bound to enhance your reading experience, the most notable of those probably being a new feature called “Fast Scan.”

Arriving as a new navigation method designed to make reading your preferred magazine editions even easier, with “Fast Scan,” users can now simply use a vertical swipe motion to scan to each edition they wish to read. Using a horizontal swipe motion will similarly allow for the advancing to the next edition in your queue.

“Breaking Stories” are also part of this update. Ranked by Google News, the new feature takes advantage of Google’s world-class search algorithm to serve users with the latest news to break on the web, also making sure to link to full length content.

Those of you out there who wish to save what you’re reading for later, may also be pleased to learn that Currents 2.0 introduces “Saved Stories” into the mix. If you find a story you like, now tapping to “star” it will immediately save it for future reference.

Those are the three major features introduced in this update. Other than the above, you’ll also find a brand-new catalog design, an “Edition” sidebar – (providing quick access to your editions within categories such as business, sports, etc.), and a bunch of performance tweaking.
