In a report which only serves to highlight the very real squeeze both Apple and Google continue to put on their market competitors, Strategy Analytics says that iOS and Android took a whopping combined total of 94-percent of the OS shipments seen in the global smartphone market, for Q4, 2012.
Android smartphone OS unit shipments were said to have reflected 152.1 Million for the quarter, which compared to iOS smartphone OS shipments of 47.8 Million. Companies in the “Other” category were said to have reflected just 17.1 Million smartphone OS shipments (combined).
This compared to the 80.6 Million smartphone OS shipments Android saw in the year-ago quarter. Q4, 2011 also saw Apple ship 37.0 Million smartphone OS units, with “Other” reflecting just 39.4 Million units.
What’s interesting is that this decline means the smartphone OS shipments reflected by the “Other” category has fell from 32.3-percent at the end of 2011, to land at just 12.2-percent of the global market at the end of 2012.
