Exploring how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future, (all the while focusing on the true consequences of dabbling with “karma,”) the movie is a £65 Million, 172-minute cinematic masterpiece that aims to encapsulate the human experience, as the Wachowski’s choose to add in their own ideas and belief of ‘reincarnation’ and life after death.
As action, mystery and romance weave dramatically through the story, and one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, whilst a single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution in the distant future, we see Tom Hanks, Halle Berry and Hugo Weaving as the film bounces back-and-forth to describe their role in 6 separate stories, that eventually (and seamlessly) intertwine to paint a vision of their collective future.
Here’s what I had to say about the movie after watching it:
“Don’t let its commercial nosedive in the US tell the whole story. Cloud Atlas is a tough sell, but a rewarding journey all the same. It’s an adventure into the very concept of storytelling: magical, enthralling and thrilling as much as bewildering, pompous and potty. In other words, up in the clouds.”
