Other notable findings included:

Click for larger version

One of the main reasons for that, still according to the startup, is the fact that the App Store for iPad became available after in-app purchases were introduced, contrary to the App Store for iPhone. Another reason to take into consideration is that the iPad may currently be used more as a media consumption device than the iPhone, with magazine and newspaper publishers selling much of their content as in-app purchases.

Gameloft. Arguably one the biggest game publishers on the App Store to date, with titles such as Asphalt 5, Brothers In Arms, Hero of Sparta and Price of Persia under its belt … to name just a few.

Today, PocketGamer is reporting that the company has seen an 11% increase in its half-year sales compared to last year, with Gameloft enjoying a hefty 113% increase in market share of its games designed specifically for iPhone and iPad.

According to the site the publisher announced Q2 figures of €33.6 million ($44 million), seeing an increase of 15 percent compared to last year. Overall this gives Gameloft half year sales figures of €66.6 million ($87.1 million).

Pocket Gamer notes:

The company said in a statement it had increased market share on the declining Java and Brew markets, and the growing smartphone market with iPhone and iPad sales increased 113 percent during Q2.

Alongside the announcement Gameloft released the following statement.

“Gameloft is expecting continued growth in 2010 in terms of revenue and profitability. In the longer term, Gameloft appears in an ideal position to benefit from the rapid emergence of the digital distribution of video games on mobile phones, tablets and consoles, as well as from major technological innovations brought to the market.”

Marianne Schultz of Arnold Kim’s AppShopper reports that the sequel to Chopper released just a few days ago, Chopper 2, does in fact use a never-before-seen user control method for its genre.

The site notes that as well as playing the game standalone, users can also “use the iPhone as an external controller to play the game on your iPad via a Bluetooth connection.”. As seen in this video below, were the iPad alone is being used to control the action of the iPhone’s screen.

Now, this isn’t new per-se, but as Schultz states this is possibly the first time we’ve seen the control method implemented for an action-oriented title.

A few days ago, we gave you the heads up that something was wrong with the latest update (0.0.1) to the App Store hit Plants Vs. Zombies. After quite a few users rated the game 1 star we went to investigate.

The issue turned out to be that many users on both the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS were experiencing the game crashing both on initial launch and while in-game.

Just a few minutes ago though we got the heads up from one of our Twitter followers (@joostf1), who was keen to inform us @PopCap_Games had just issued an update to the game in the form of version 1.3.

The new update specifically fixes the crash-related bugs we previously reported on.

If you can’t yet find the new update on the store, it is probably propagating to your region as we speak. We’d love to know if this update fixes the crashing issues. Leave us a comment.

Developed by iQubi, The War Of Eustrath sees players controlling various units called “Gears” to aid you in a fight against good versus evil. Eustrath is a magical kingdom in which lies the type of technology we’ve never set eyes on before here on Earth, and is inhabited by creatures called the ‘Elementals’.

Taking advantage of your unearthly powers, players are left to battle against two types of deadly fighting machine; Elemental Gears and Mechanical Gears.

The stage of this game is the world called ‘Eustrath’. Even though it has advanced technologies it differs from Earth by the existence of Elementals. Like magic in a typical fantasy world, the power of Elementals is accepted and utilized in everyday life. One of them are fighting machines called ‘Elemental GEARs’. And there are also fighting machines called ‘Mechanical GEARs’ whose power comes from the pure mechanical energy not elemental energy. These GEARs ,both Elemental and Mechanical, are natural element of Eustrath. People accept them as part of their life and mainly utilize them for warfares.

Throughout the history of Eustrath, there were three great wars recorded. This game is an attempt to revive one of those wars. The heroine of the game is a country girl ‘Tiana’, You can control her and her companions to build the history of Eustrath.

Very much an anime-inspired adventure and already available for iPad, The War Of Eustrath launches on iPhone at a limited-time offer price of £1.79.

We’ll have a full review for you guys and girls soon!

Proudly sponsored by Chillingo Ltd – A weekly round-up on the latest and greatest apps to have hit the App Store. Hit the jump for more!

Modern Conflict is out now on the App Store $0.99

We have an awesome sponsor, @Chillingo! Look out for this segment to be continued for months to come. Thanks guys!

Firstly, apologies for the lack of segments. I have had exams and have been focusing on doing well in them. Expect The Week That Was to return to a weekly post once again. The past three weeks have livened up the slow summer season with a large variety of releases from many of our favourite developers. The best thing I found in the latest releases is that the retina display is getting supported by a majority of new releases. The iPhone 4 is quickly becoming a must have for all serious iPhone-gamers. So let’s get on with it and take a look at the best games over the last three weeks!

Zen Bound 2 – $2.99

Zen Bound was one of the games of 2009. Secret Exit threw out all ideas from other games and made a simply beautiful and peaceful game. Who knew wrapping rope around figures could be so amazing? For a while now, the iPad has been graced with the long awaited sequel. Thankfully for the 100 million of us this game has been updated so everyone (1st Generation users included) can now play all the new Zen Bound levels. Trust me when I say this, Zen Bound is the going to be the sequel of the year.

As soon as you buy Zen Bound 2, you will delete Zen Bound. This game not only features Retina Display graphics, gyroscope capabilities and over 100 new levels, but also everything you see in the original Zen Bound. The relaxing music, no time limits and ease of use makes Zen Bound 2 one of the best games available on the App Store. This is the game you want to use to show off the tilt and touch controls of the iPhone. If you haven’t bought the game for the extremely cheap price of $2.99, then you better get it before you finish reading this post.

Archetype - $2.99

My real gripe with Eliminate by NgMoco was that the freemium approach meant we were limited to the number of matches we could play. Gameloft’s attempts were mediocre at best and COD: Zombies doesn’t actually offer a mode that lets you shoot each other. Finally Archetype has come along for a one off price that allows for unlimited multiplayer matches. What is even better? It is available to everyone and for those lucky iPhone 4 users you can play Archetype with brilliant graphics optimised for your device.

Now this team deathmatch set up is a lot of fun. You play in teams with either friends or other Archetype owners all around the world. It runs quite well and the variety of weapons and maps is decent for a start, but I can’t see it competing with Eliminate over a long term period unless it continues to improve the game. More customization of your own player is needed for this game to be truly successful and not a short term boom. If you have no power left on Eliminate then this is definitely the game you need to try.

Let’s Golf 2 - $4.99

Let’s Golf is easily one of the two best golf games on the App Store, along with Tiger Wood’s PGA Tour obviously. This arcade golf game is our version of Everybody’s Golf on the PSP. After over a year since the original title graced our iDevices, we now have a much improved sequel. Once again, this game now supports the Retina Display as well as including double the characters and two more courses than last time. Each golf course now has more modes to make the game last longer, probably double the original.

When it comes down to it, this is still the same game we loved over a year ago. Sure the graphics are better and we have more content to sink our teeth in, but the game controls and everything else is the same. This is fine though because the original was a cracking game, something that is evident in Lets Golf 2. This is an excellent game for casual and hardcore golf fans and gamers a like. It will take you hours to complete the career and that’s only the start of it. Challenges and more make for an excellent deal at only $4.99

RISK: The Official Game - $4.99

For a long, long time we have had RISK-Like games to play on the App Store. From games like recent titles Dominion to long time favourites such as Lux Dlx. Electronic Arts have finally brought the official game to the App Store, but few have wondered whether it is too late or doesn’t pack enough features. After playing RISK for a while I would have to agree with these people. RISK doesn’t offer enough content for the price, because there are unofficial titles that pack more content for the price at hand.

You can play RISK with either the computer, 4 friends over WiFi or 6 over Pass n Play. I was really hoping for some online multiplayer to really take this brand to the next level. Lux Dlx has a heap of different maps and really gives it an edge over Risk who sticks to the basics. This game is still fun with the ‘dice’ attacking and classic domination experience. I was personally expecting more and possibly it will be updated with more content. RISK fans should still enjoy this game, just make sure you know that there are other choices on the App Store.

It’s always great to receive the heads up on a major update to an app, especially when that app you’re getting the heads up on is as highly respected as Appigo’s Todo for iPhone and iPad.

Announced via mailshot sent to us about 30 minutes ago, Appigo announced Todo version 4 for iPhone and iPad is incoming and should be here soon. It is obvious from the mailshot that we’re in for some iOS 4 support in both versions of the application, although nothing specific is stated as far as new features.

Little else is known about the update other than it will bring support for the latest version of iOS, iOS 4. However, Appigo says Appigo Sync for both Mac and Windows will also be getting updates to support the new features.

I recently gave a first look at the software for iPad. Here’s a little of what I thought.

Overall, my first impression of Todo for iPad is a good one, and to celebrate its release the app is just $4.99. Half the price of the company’s iPhone client, and that’s big news. if you want to create, organise and manage your tasks on a day to day basis, Todo for iPad by Appigo brings the goods with a clean, customizable interface, without the loss of performance or functionality.

Stay tuned as we’ll have more news on this update as it develops!

Remember we reported that the latest update to the App Store hit Plants vs. Zombies caused the game to crash? – Well it turns out that wasn’t the full story.

Sure, the update does make the game crash, with hundreds of users reporting issues on multiple devices, but what slipped the net was that the update also removed a well-loved zombie character.

If you’ve ever played through the levels on Plants vs. Zombies, you’ll likely have noticed the game features a zombie which impersonated the look of the late Michael Jackson.

Well, according to Kotaku, it turns out the real Jackson estate got word of the MJ inspired character and ordered @PopCap_Games to pull it completely.

So far though, the change has only been implemented on the iPhone and iPod touch version of the game, although we have it on good authority that more updates are coming to remove the Jackson zombie from the iPad version and other subsequent versions of the game, too.

What a shame.

[Update] – Here’s the company’s official statement on the matter.

“The Estate of Michael Jackson objected to our use of the ‘dancing zombie’ in PLANTS vs. ZOMBIES based on its view that the zombie too closely resembled Michael Jackson. After receiving this objection, PopCap made a business decision to retire the original ‘dancing zombie’ and replace it with a different ‘dancing zombie’ character for future builds of PLANTS vs.ZOMBIES on all platforms. The phase-out and replacement process is underway.”
