During Apple’s WWDC keynote last week, there was a noticeable and distinct lack of mention regarding the company’s popular tablet – the iPad. While it is now clear that Apple is running a little behind on the development of iOS 7, (highlighted by the fact that the developer betas are only available for the iPhone and iPod touch), the company wasn’t even prepared to show one screenshot of iOS 7 running on iPad or iPad mini.
With ‘Father’s Day’ coming up on Sunday, June 16, Apple has this afternoon issued a new mailshot to its customers in an attempt to drive sales traffic to its online store for the annual event. The mailshot focuses heavily on both the iPad and iPad mini, and is accompanied by the tagline: “Pick up a gift Dad will never put down.”
In other news, Bloomberg is reporting that Apple has seemingly hiked the prices of both its iPad and iPod products across Japan, this week.
Also notable this weekend is an update recently pushed to Yahoo! Mail. Originally hitting the App Store back in December 2011, the latest update to the mail client alternative introduces full ‘Universal’ support, seeing the app now offer a separate native UI for those using both Apple’s full-size iPad and iPad mini.
In other not-so-newsworthy news, (we think you’ll agree the Apple rumor-mill has been largely stagnant lately), the guys at Nowhereelse.fr are back this week with a purported shot of what they claim could show the front bezel of Apple’s next-generation iPad.
Just another interesting tidbit regarding the USPTO’s 180-reversed decision on Apple’s previously blocked “iPad mini” trademark. According to 9to5Mac, although the trademark will indeed be granted to the Cupertino company for use in its marketing relating to the smaller tablet, it will reportedly only be granted under the condition that Apple must add a small block of small print wherever the mark is used.
Perhaps showing just how important widespread publicity is when you are facing a rejection from the likes of the U.S Patent and Trademark Office, a new ‘office action’ published by the governing body today suggests, (at least on first impressions), that the USPTO has completely reversed its preliminary decision to block the trademarking of Apple’s “iPad mini,” seemingly without Apple having to rectify the previously reported issues with the filing.
Uh-Oh. According to Forbes, The U.S Patent and Trademark Office has officially denied Apple’s trademark application covering the ‘iPad mini’. In a letter issued to the Cupertino CA company, recently, the U.S trademark governing body stated that it is rejecting U.S Trademark Application No. 85780375, on the grounds that the original trademark applied for “merely describes a feature or characteristic of [the] applicant’s goods,” further clarifying that the mark is “merely descriptive” in its nature.
Launching at the end of last year, YouTube’s video capture and upload app – YouTube Capture – is also extending its reach this week, with the Google-owned company now offering a native version of the app for Apple’s iPad, as well as the recently-launched iPad mini.
As speculation surrounding the second iteration of Apple’s 7.9-inch tablet continues to swirl, members of the WeiPhone message boards have this week shared a number of photos depicting – what they claim – is the rear aluminum shell of Apple’s second-generation iPad mini.
