Making a rather valid point, the CEO of BlackBerry, (formerly, Research In Motion), says that the user interface on Apple’s popular smartphone – the iPhone – is now just calling for a revamp, with the smartphone having already passed its 5-year anniversary with little overall change to its user interface.
ZDNet this morning reports that smartphone manufacturer Nokia has officially entered into a new patent licensing deal with Research in Motion (RIM). The new deal relates to the ownership and continued use of patents which cover a number of wireless technologies both companies are currently said to take advantage of in their mobile handsets, and will see Nokia accept a one-off payment, (alongside future fees), from the Canadian-based company.
Timed to take the focus off the fallout of next year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Research In Motion this evening announced that its next special media event will take place on January 30. The event will be held in New York City, with simultaneous events set to be held in London, Paris and Toronto.
While some may have already dismissed RIM as ever being able to compete with the likes of Apple and Samsung in the tablet space, new photos shared by Vietnamese site Tinhte this evening appear to suggest the company isn’t done with its tablet offerings, just yet.
I don’t have to be the one to tell you that Research In Motion has been in trouble for quite some time — and with what was supposed to act as the firm’s ‘come-back’ moment, the company confirmed what analysts had been fearing most. RIM is hemorrhaging cash.
That’s right. Following its “Wake Up” campaign – (in which the firm admitted it had hired a flash mob to descend on one of Apple’s prominent retail stores located in the heart of Sydney, Australia, last month) – 9to5Mac reports that the company has this week appointed not only a new Chief Marketing Officer, but also a new Chief Operating Officer.
Last week, you may remember we brought you news of a strange protest that had took place in Sydney, Australia outside one of the city’s Apple retail stores. The protest consisted of a Black-painted bus paraded around the city with the words “WAKE UP” on its side.
It appears Paczkowski was right. If you still had any doubt that BlackBerry maker RIM was in trouble, take a look at this recent report by Bloomberg. In it, the publication announces that Alistair Mitchell, Vice President Of RIM’s BlackBerry Division, has in fact already left the company. However, Mitchell isn’t the only company executive leaving for greener pastures. RIM’s own Senior Vice President, Alan Brenner, is also reported to be set to exit the company, after what the firm called a ‘transition period.’
With RIM’s BlackBerry Playbook having officially launched earlier this week, analysts are now claiming that the company managed to sell just 45,000 units on opening day. That figure surfaces as Peter Misek of researchanalyst firm Jeffries & Co claims RIM is estimated to have taken in 25,000 pre-orders for the device, afterwards selling a further 20,000 units in-store.
Having hit store shelves today, RIM’s own iPad-competing BlackBerry PlayBook tablet has received far from positive reviews. With most hands-on reviews claiming the device is both half-baked and “rushed out”, some believe the PlayBook may be dead on arrival.
